A real example: how Bosch builds the workforce it needs


Bosch Vietnam offers one of the clearest examples of a manufacturer that decided to build its skilled workforce rather than simply compete to hire one. Faced with the need for highly skilled technicians for its high-tech production, the German company chose to create that talent directly.


In 2013, Bosch established a Technical Industrial Apprenticeship program in Dong Nai, built on German dual-vocational training standards. The design is deliberately practical: apprentices spend the majority of their time, around three quarters, doing hands-on training on modern equipment, with the remainder on theory at a partner technical college. Over roughly a decade, the program has graduated more than 200 technicians, and a high share of graduates have gone on to work at Bosch, which means the company effectively grows much of its own skilled workforce.

Bosch does not stop at training new entrants. The company has also reported investing on the order of 100,000 learning hours a year in the ongoing development of its existing staff. That combination is the whole point. Bringing skilled people into the pipeline and continuously developing the people already inside the business is what keeps a manufacturer ahead of the skills gap rather than chasing it.


The encouraging part for smaller manufacturers is that the principle scales down. You do not need Bosch's budget or a formal apprenticeship center to apply the same logic.
